Central Office Expectations

When we work with a district, we know that its central office is making progress when it:

  1. Supports the work in its words, actions and deeds.
The environment and culture of each central services decision unit demonstrates through its words, deeds and actions that it supports the district-wide focus on the work — superb results from all students.
  2. Collaborates with schools and other decision units to support the work.
The team members within each decision unit show obvious evidence that they are collaborating in support of the work, and that they are working closely with their fellow schools, trustees, departments and other decision units.
  3. Aligns its resources to support the work.
There is obvious evidence that each decision unit has aligned its resources (time, people, and dollars) to support the work — superb results from all students.
  4. Uses SMARTe targets as its goals for improvement.
Each decision unit uses at least two SMARTe targets (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound) as goals for improving service and support to schools. One of those targets is for an external measure such as customer satisfaction surveys, while another is for an internal measure such as response time to staff inquiries. Results are made easily available, publicly posted, and are part of an internal accountability system that is used as a lens into decision-making.
